چکیده

A dramatic increase in agricultural production can be observed during the past decades in Brazil, mostly due to increases in yield. Furthermore the sugarcane production increased based on area expansion, mainly over pasture areas. In the same period Brazil became a leading global beef producer. Brazilian official agricultural statistics time series data on agricultural production from 1980 until today and census data at municipality level can show trends and consequences of agricultural and sugarcane area expansion, as well as, pasture area and livestock production. Detailed analysis is needed, considering for example the geographical distribution, the types of systems involved (e.g. purely pasture and integrated crop-livestock integration iCL) and management variables. Some efforts have been made in order to study these aspects, especially in the Brazilian agricultural frontiers. Sugarcane and crop masks obtained by satellite imagery can indicate where the expansion and intensification occurred. Furthermore detailed analysis, based on time series of satellite images, can indicate what type of intensification is happening and what management practices are responsible for that. As an example: animal rotation is a key factor in pasture management and intensification, it has been quantitatively evaluated in Brazil but just in a very limited extent, and it ́s readily amenable to remote sensing approaches. The goal of this study is characterize pasture areas according to their management with MODIS time series.

Biophysical Properties of Cultivated Pastures in the Brazilian Savanna Biome: An Analysis in the Spatial-Temporal Domains Based on Ground and Satellite Data

Brazil has the largest commercial beef cattle herd in the world, with cattle ranching being particularly prominent in the 200-million ha, Brazilian neotropical moist savanna biome, known as Cerrado, one of the world’s hotspots for biodiversity conservation. As decreasing productivity is a major concern affecting the Cerrado pasturelands, evaluation of pasture conditions through the determinatio...

Mapping land use of tropical regions from space.

A n alarming annual average deforestation rate of 22,500 km2 in the Brazilian Amazon (1) from 2000 to 2005 has focused international attention on Brazil because of the destruction of this high-biodiversity biome (2) and its globally significant contribution to carbon emissions (3). Deforestation has already converted 680,000 km2 of pristine forests to other land covers, accounting for 75% of Br...

Estimating Pasture Productivity in the Brazilian Savanna Biome Based on Moderate Resolution Satellite Data

Brazil has the largest commercial beef cattle herd in the world (over 190 million head in 2006) [1], with cultivated pastures occupying about 150 million hectares of its territory [2]. On a biome basis, the most extensive pasture occupation is found in the Cerrado (~ 546,251 km, amounting to about 26.8% of the total biome area and 36.8% of the total pasture area in Brazil), the Brazilian savann...

Wavelet analysis of MODIS time series to detect expansion and intensification of row-crop agriculture in Brazil

Since 2000, the southwestern Brazilian Amazon has undergone a rapid transformation from natural vegetation and pastures to row-crop agricultural with the potential to affect regional biogeochemistry. The goals of this research are to assess wavelet algorithms applied to MODIS time series to determine expansion of row-crops and intensification of the number of crops grown. MODIS provides data fr...

Evaluating TERRA-1 MODIS data for discrimination of tropical secondary forest regeneration stages in the Brazilian Legal Amazon

[1] We establish the potential of TERRA-1 Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) data for discriminating and mapping tropical secondary forest regeneration stages in the Brazilian Legal Amazon, in terms of both their age and pathway. In using MODIS data, many difficulties encountered in local to regional scale mapping and discrimination of regeneration stage using NOAA Advanced Very H...
